Thalassaemia hair on end appearance on skull x-ray

Thalassaemia is a systemic haematological condition which can give rise to abnormal radiographic appearances in a wide range of bones. When advanced, it can give a classical "hair on end" appearance which is seen on both the skull x-ray and now more commonly head CT scans.

This video explains the theory behind hair-on-end and thinning of the outer table which can be applied to both modalities.
